A long route from the coast to the mountains
This long-distance route connects Berja with the Granada coast and the interior mountain ranges of the Alpujarra. After descending to the area near La Rábita, the day’s longest climb begins: Albondón, via Albuñol. It’s a tough ascent—almost 24 km at 6.1% average gradient—making it one of the region’s major climbs.
Inland through Murtas and Turón
From the summit, the route heads inland toward Torvizcón and climbs to Murtas, entering La Contraviesa, a rugged range between the Alpujarra and the sea. As altitude increases, so does vegetation. The landscape shifts from dry coastal brush to greener hillsides with terraced fields and scattered farmhouses.
Several shorter climbs follow before reaching Turón, which marks the start of the final section back to Berja via the quiet road alongside the Benínar reservoir.
For strong riders seeking a full mountain day
This route blends a major ascent with rolling terrain and secondary climbs. Road surfaces are in good condition, traffic is light, and the scenery evolves along the way. It’s ideal for cyclists looking for a challenging, full-day mountain route with great variety.
